Maine Pyar Kiya - I love you Sallu

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/mpk1.jpg

Kishan (Rajeev Verma) and Karan (Alok Nath) have been friends for a long time. Karan is now rich and lives in a huge mansion while Karan is still struggling. But when Karan had to go away for work, he needed his daughter Suman (Bhagyashree) to stay with Kishan. Kishan's son Prem (Salman Khan) befriends Suman and they slowly fall in love with each other. Kishan refuses Prem and Suman to be together due to Suman and her father's poor status. Prem swears to leave his father's riches and make money on his own to prove to Suman and her father. Will he suceed? Does love conquer all?

Maine Pyar Kiya is one of my favorite films of all times. It was the biggest hit in 1989 and introduced me to the hottie Salman Khan. I fell in love with the movie and music. While watching this movie over, all my childhood memories came back to when I first saw this film at my uncle's house in Madison, WI, when I was probably 13 years old. Watching it again now, I can see a newbie disliking it. Bollywood films have changed overtime. It's not the same anymore. You hardly see any modern Bollywood films about poor/rich boy/girl. Those storylines were really popular in the 80s and early 90s.

Read with caution. Contains spoilers!!

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_013.jpg

Salman Khan looks so young and handsome in Maine Pyar Kiya. Love him or hate him, you have to admit he was very good in his earlier films. I don't care what anyone says, I still think he's as good looking as can be. I've met him during the Rockstars Concert in 2006 and still thought he was hot and sweet. As the first Bollywood hunk to steal my heart away,
he will always have a special place in my heart. Salman as Prem, just melts me away. He has been Prem in so many films that I used to just call him Prem. I love Prem in Maine Pyar Kiya. I love how he tries to be this macho guy but inside he's really humble. Watching Maine Pyar Kiya again makes me want to watch all of Salman Khan's earlier films (I've seen all his films).

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_016.jpg

Bhagyashree is just so adorable but her voice annoys me a bit.
She plays the shy, bashful, cute Suman. I was sad when Bhagyashree got married early in her career to Himalya and only played in films with him. In the past few years, she's been back but in supporting roles and on tv shows.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_014.jpg

Laxmikant Berde plays the funny sidekick Manohar. Manohar is a true friend to Prem and gets him out of trouble when he can. He has a crush on the milk lady and accompanies Suman when she's lonely. Laxmikant was my favorite comedian. I was sad when he passed away. RIP!

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_005.jpg

Huma Khan plays the milk lady Gulabiya. She's in a couple of songs in the film. Her love story with Manohar is just too cute!

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_011.jpg

Rajeev Verma plays Kishan, Prem's rich father. Having more money made him change his friendship with his long time friend. Although he hates to admit it, Suman isn't a bad girl. It's his rep he's more worried about. Rajeev has been in a lot of films but I remember him most in Maine Pyar Kiya.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_009.jpg

Alok Nath plays Karan, Suman's poor father. Although he doesn't have that much money and is struggling, he strives for the best for his daughter and him. He never thought his friend Kishan would look down at him. Alok is one of my favorite dads in Bollywood.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_020.jpg

Reema Lagoo plays Prem's mother. She is the most loveable mom of all times. I love her. With a kind heart, she knows what her son wants but is trapped between her loyalty to her husband and son. I love Reema Lagoo.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_019.jpg

Mohnish Behl plays the snotty, spoiled Jeevan. He is jealous of Prem and tries to rape Suman. In his early films, Mohnish played a lot of shady characters. Many may or may not know but in real life, he is Kajol and Rani's cousin.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_008.jpg

Pervin Dastur plays Seema, Jeevan's brother. She tries to win Prem's heart but is unsuccessful. I know curly hair was stylish in the late 80s to early 90s but gosh, she looks like a drag queen sometimes. She dresses only on modern clothing. Why does wearing modern clothing indicate you're rich and snotty?

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_006.jpg

Ajit Vachani plays Ranjeet, the evil guy who brainwashes Kishan in thinking Suman only wants to marry Prem for money. He is the uncle of Jeevan and Seema.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_041.jpg

Let's not forget the famous pigeon name Handsome. Funny as it seems, he even has his own IMDB page. Suman saves Handsome from being shot by mean Jeevan at Suman's party. Handsome never forgets that tragic event and owes Suman his life.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_034.jpg

The fashion is differently talked about now. I think Suman's outfit can pass for a fashion do in the Hollywood film, Pretty in Pink.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_007.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_003.jpg

I still love Salman Khan but his body has gotten a total transformation! He's buff now and obviously waxes his chest.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_010.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_027.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_031.jpg

Maine Pyar Kiya is Salman and Bhagyashree's debut film.
The title song is the opening credits. The song is actually a copy of "I Just Called to Say I Love You" by Stevie Wonder.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_028.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_029.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_030.jpg

The second song is "Tum Ladki Ho" starts off Prem and Manohar cheering the sad Suman because she misses her father when she gets a letter from him. Right before the letter, Suman challenges Prem to a table tennis match because cocky Prem doesn't think girls can play well. Prem tells Suman crying/sadness is injurous to health since earlier she told him smoking is injurous to health.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_018.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_024.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_025.jpg

Cigarette smoking is injurous to your health. Suman saves Prem and Manohar from getting in trouble.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_039.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_042.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_000.jpg

The third song "Kabutar Ja Ja" is one of my favorite song from the film. Suman and Prem were unsure of their relationship but Prem realizes that he does love Suman. He leaves home with his parents to attend a meeting and leaves Suman a letter expressing his love for her. Suman does love Prem too! How would she let him know? She wrote him a letter. Handsome, the pigeon, comes in and volunteers to deliver the letter to Prem. The lovers will be reunited.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/03.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/07.jpg

The fourth song "Aaja Shyam Hone Aaye" is a cute song with Prem and Suman trying to get out of the house to be together. No one knows about their relationship yet. However, Suman can't and ends up staying back and Prem ends up disappointed and sad.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/04.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/mpk00000.jpg

The fifth song is "Antakshari." It's a game song played by Indians. I love the game! Suman expresses her love to Prem in the song. He's been waiting for her to tell him that she loves him.

The songs in this song are the following....got it from YouTube.

- SARGAM (1979) - Hum To Chale Pardes

- Johny Mera Naam (1970) -Husn Ke Lakh Rang
- ROTI (1974) - Gore Rang Pe Na Itna
- KANHAIYA (1959) - Ruk Ja O Jaanewaali
- CHORI CHORI (1956) - Jahan Main Jaati
-FARZ (1967) - Hum To Tere Aashiq
- HIMMATWALA (1983) - Nainon Mein Sapna
- ROTI (1974) - Yeh Public Hai Public Babu
- JEWEL THIEF (1967) - Hoton Pe Aisi Baat
- SHARABI (1984) - Intaha Ho Gayi Intezaar Ki
- MR INDIA (1987) - Kaate Nahi Kat Te Ye Din

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/02.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/08.jpg

The sixth song is "Dil Deewana." Prem and Suman spends time together since they both are in love with each other.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/05.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/06.jpg

The seventh song is "Mere Rang Maine Rangne." It is a copy of "Final Countdown" by Europe. Prem celebrates Suman's birthday by singing and dancing to her while she changes in the clothes Prem buys her.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/10.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/09.jpg

The eighth song is "Dil Deewana," the sad version. Suman gets kicked out of Prem's house by his father. Prem goes to Suman's house and pleads with her father. However, Suman's father is really upset and doesn't accept Prem's apology.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/01.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/11.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/12.jpg

The ninth song is "Dil Deke Darde." Prem dreams about Suman. They will be together. He works hard to prove to Suman's father that he can earn his own money.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/13.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_017.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/15.jpg

The tenth song is "Kahe Tohse Sajana." Suman sees how hard Prem is working. Prem lives the life of a person struggling to make his own money.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_023.jpg

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_021.jpg

One of my favorite scene of Suman is when she finally stands up to her father to tell him how hard Prem has been working. Her father wouldn't except the wet money Prem gave her father. I wasn't expecting this from her because she always remained quiet.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/PDVD_022.jpg

A funny scene is when Handsome remembers when Jeevan was trying to take his life.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/maine3.jpg

Prem and Suman finally gets married. Suman is still so shy.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/maine1.jpg

Manohar and
Gulabiya gets married too.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/maine2.jpg

Let's not forget Handsome. Wow, he even finds a mate. Look at his wife with the red ribbon. :)

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Miane%20Pyar%20Kiya/MainePyarKiya.jpg

I rambled on and on about Maine Pyar Kiya. I love it! When I first the movie on dvd, I was disappointed the songs weren't translated. Why translate the whole movie and leave the songs? Then I found another version with the songs translated. After so many viewings, the dvd stop playing in the middle!!! I have to get another copy. Maine Pyar Kiya is one of my all time favorites!!

Wow, I would hardly recognize Salman. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I think his chest looks better with the hair. LOL The movie sounds cute!

I know! I was rewatching it and was wowed by how much Salman has changed over the years. Do try to watch it. I'm going to review a lot of movies I've seen before just for the heck of it cause I have more to say about them, especially my faves. :)

I loved this movie when it came out, but more because of Bhagyashree who used to star in my favorite TV serial before the movie. Tried re-watching a few years later and could no longer get the charm of the movie! :-( Perhaps it was because I thought Mohnish Behl was more handsome and interesting looking than Salman Khan!!!

Nicki said...

Aaaawww! I still think still Sallu is adorable. Mohnish isn't bad either. Some movies just makes me feel nostalgia...that's why I love Maine Pyar Kiya so much.

I love this post! Salman is great in whatever form possible- though I think he looks best currently, despite the teeny bald patch.
I did find Bhagyashree annoying- or perhaps it was jsut the chracter she was playing- the voice, the overt shyness, the outfits- argh. But the shyness may be excused- it was a more innocent time :)

Nicki said...

Thanks! Sallu is sooo adorable in Maine Pyar Kiya. I went all out with the caps on this post.

You know, I do hate Bhagyashree's voice too but I agree with you about her innocence only excuseable because of the era. :)

Nicki!
What a great tribute you wrote up. You were very thorough and caught all of my favorite parts of this film! I did a little write up a while back and put in a link to the intro, but it turns out (for now anyway) to be the entire movie. So when you need a hit of MPK, check this out:

http://bollywoodfoodclub.wordpress.com/2007/10/20/video-of-the-day-maine-pyar-kiya-intro-theme-or-is-it-really-i-just-called-to-say-i-love-you/

All the best,
Sita-ji

p.s.I agree with bollyviewer regarding Mohnish Behl's extreme handsomeness. It also eclipsed Salman's for me too, even though he was a real scoundrel.

Nicki said...

Thanks so much Sita-ji. I left you a comment on that blog. :)

Nicki,

I have a question about Maine Pyar Kya. Have you ever seen Hum Aapke Hain Kaun? If so, how does it compare to MPK? Meaning, do you think MPK is as cheesy as HAHK?

I ask because I would really like to try watching Maine Pyar Kya but had a really hard time sitting through HAHK :$

Nicki said...

Hey Nida!

I'm glad you are considering watching Maine Pyar Kiya. :)

Yes, I've seen Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. Honestly, I don't see why that movie is so great. Hum Saath Saath Hain is more of the HAHK range. Long movie with happy moments, yet boring in the beginning, lots of songs.

I think MPK is way better. HAHK didn't pick up until near the end.

Salman is just too adorable in HAHK. I like Salman the most in a few of his other older films which I do want to write up a review on later on.

Nicki,

That settles it, then--I'll put Maine Pyar Kya on my list to purchase!:)

Agree that HAHK didn't pick up until later on...but had some fun scattered throughout(Salman was definitely some of this appeal, as was Madhuri and the music).

I have a better feeling about MPK. Can't wait to watch it!

Nicki said...

Yah Nida, can't wait to read your review

Awww, so cute. Just like the movie. The songs in this are just fantastic! Seeing the pics made me recall the lyrics and the picturizations.. Lovely stuff. I wouldn't say Salman has changed that much, though. I think back in the 80's it must've been so wild to have a young hero who works out! Salman was buff even in this film, just not with such bulky muscles, rather just lean and noticeably muscular. :D

Nicki said...

I just love MPK. I'm glad you got to see it though Sannai.

wow you're a fan of MPK alright! A very well done site and guide to the movie.

I do a radio show in my home town and i need that sound sample from MPK, the one that says, "..II loveeee youuu..." and she kisses the glass door to leave her lipstick mark. I really want that, "I love you" sound bite. Any idea where i can get it from? Mail answers to bdeshi420@gmail.com

thank you.
