Jewel Thief - finally a Dev Anand film!

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p464/blogspot_images1/Jewel%20Thief/jewelthief.jpg

It's a case of mistaken identity! People keep mistakening Vinay (Dev Anand) for this Amar, also known as Prince Amar. Why? This Prince Amar is a jewel thief. He agrees to impersonate Amar to capture the real Amar.

Vinay was just trying to woo his lady-love but people keep saying he is this Amar guy. He's great at identifying stones and jewelry.

Anjali aka Anju - Vinay's lady-love. You can see Kajol in her. Both are so natural at acting.

Shalini aka Shalu. Vyjayanthimala - I hate to say this but this is my first film of hers. She's cute and I'm not in love with her but I would like to see more of her.

Arjun Singh (Ashok Kumar) - Shalu's older brother.

Ever since I wrote about my experience with meeting the legendary Dev Anand here, I've had comments and e-mails ridiculing me because I haven't seen a Dev Anand film but chose to go to the event to meet him. The funny thing is right before I decided to watch Jewel Thief, I realized that I have seen a Dev Anand films - Des Pardes. I mainly watched it for Tina Munim since I'm a fan of hers. I do like Jewel Thief. It's an older film so the pace is slow at times but very stylish. Thought the script and acting were great and unpredictable! My only complaint is not enough Tanuja or Helen.

So what are my thoughts about Dev Anand?? Well, he's a great actor, no doubt. Would I want to keep watching films with him? Maybe, depending on the recommendations and if I could find the films, I wouldn't mind. However, I'm not rushing out to try to find his films. Jewel Thief did not turn me into a Dev Anand fan at all. But it did let me see why others love him and find him talented. Indeed he is. Just because I'm not a fan...yet...doesn't mean I don't appreciate his work. Remember, I'm the selfish-shallow Hmong girl who goes by looks. Just my preference. We all have different opinions. Once I see more films of him, I'll blog about it here.

I've been hearing about the music for so long. Mainly because of the famous Vyjayanthimala dance number. And even Helen's!

I love this movie. One of the few 60s thrillers where the second half isnt predictable and there is no maudlin sentimentality. The movie sets out to be a thriller and never deviates from it. Agree with you about there not being enough Tanuja - she was super cute and fun! :-)

Well done Nicki.

You will find all my recommendations worthwhile but Guide, which was especially honoured at Cannes this year, is undoubtedly Dev Anand's best film and one of the greatest Indian films ever made. So make that your next Dev film - if you will.

It may or may not make you 'love' him but you will love the story, music, photography and Waheeda Rehman's fabulous dances.

Now please stop telling us that "I'm the selfish-shallow Hmong girl"! You are probably anything but...and I for one certainly do not believe you. In any case, it is always best to be true to yourself and do your own thing. Dev Anand did - and without apologies!

All the best Nicki,
Philip

Ah a Dev classic.
It is strange that while Dev isnt my fav star, I have probably enjoyed everyone of his movies, while not necessarily his acting- which probably speaks to his own genious.

Nicki!
Great post! I agree with shweta about not especially liking Dev, but liking his films, go figure. I loved Jewel Thief, complete eye candy. I've posted on it a few times too and this one links into all of them:

"selfish-shallow???" What the heck, Nicki? Don't be so mean! LOL Thanks for profiling the movie; I haven't ever seen a Dev Anand film either. BTW, love the new Bips banner!

LOL ajnabi - it's mainly cause of the whole meeting Dev Anand post I mentioned earlier. It's generated from the comments I got. People questioning me why I haven't seen Dev's work and I go meet him.

Thanks. Me likes new banner too. :)

The Hoton song is so cool!! I love the gypsy feel to it, though I prefer the more desi-banjaran sort of costumes for this style, a little bit like what they wore in the MP desert number.
Thanks for the screencaps ApunBindaas, now I'll have to go watch this song again :)
