Moksha - Arjun at his best

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm253/blogspot_images/Moksha/modka2.jpg

Vikram (Arjun Rampal) is a law graduate and is not happy with life. His idealistic views to change the corrupted society in the world has gotten the best of him. Trying to set up a "free for the poor" law service, he finds it hard to do because not everyone is open minded like him, not even his father. In addition, he doesn't have the funds to start his dream plan. With the help from his girlfriend Ritika (Manisha Koirala), they plan to get to get the money. He made a promise to achieve his dream and won't back down at all until he reaches it. Will he achieve it?

Arjun Rampal - the first hunky model turn actor who I was obsess with. "That's hot." Just by a flip of a page, he melted my heart - that's how fine he is. Although I am not as obsessive as I used to be about him, I still love him because he holds a special place in my heart. Many do not know but Moksha was suppose to be Arjun's debut film. It was shelved for so many months. Pyar Ishq Aur Mohabbat (review later, possibly) became Arjun's debut film. After so many years, Arjun finally gets the recognition he deserves for his acting. Sadly Arjun had to wait to be in a concert with Shah Rukh Khan first before everyone started seeing his hotness. Then came along Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Om Shanti Om. I'm just glad there is more appreciation for Arjun now. He also has the sexiest voice in Bollywood. Hands down. Playing Vikram was a great choice, Arjun proves he's just not another hot face to look at.

Manisha is an awesome actress who faded over time. What I mean by that is she started off her career strong, had lots of flops and just disappeared. I definitely miss seeing on-screen. She was one of my favorite actresses from the 90s. What made me like Manya even more is she agreed to do Moksha with Arjun. Arjun has said in an interview before that he was grateful for Manya to be in the film because not a lot of actresses wanted to debut with a model turn actor. (I can not find that article online. I mean this movie came out in 2001. During that time, a lot of articles weren't assesible like it is now.) Although Manya's character Rithika annoyed me in the beginning a bit, I still love Moksha.

Kalpana Pandit plays Rithika's overprotective friend Neelima. When I first saw Kalpana, I thought she was the lovely Lisa Ray. Kalpana doesn't have a big role in the movie but it's significant and she's featured in the famous "Jaan Leva" song. However, her little role is bigger than most of the supporting cast.

Suresh Oberoi plays Arjun's father. He thinks Vikram's ideas are great but unrealistic. Although he is weathly, he refuses to give Vikram money to open up his "free for the poor" law service. For those who didn't know, in real life, he's the father of actor Vivek Oberoi.

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm253/blogspot_images/Moksha/PDVD_082.jpg

Farida Jalal plays the poor person who inspired Vikram for his idea of "free for the poor" law service. Her son was innocent but didn't have enough money to pay for a lawyer.

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm253/blogspot_images/Moksha/PDVD_097.jpg

Sushma Sen plays Riktika's loving grandma. She loves Riktika so much.

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm253/blogspot_images/Moksha/PDVD_230.jpg

Nasseeruddin Shah plays Dean, the guy who wants to help Vikram with his "free for the poor" law service. But Vikram has to get the money first.

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm253/blogspot_images/Moksha/PDVD_108.jpg

Paresh Pawal plays Vikram's uncle Sharan. He was the only one who believed in Vikram and willing to help Vikram out.

Moksha - the name itself is very powerful. Taken from Wikipedia, it means the cycle of death and rebirth or reincarnation and all of the suffering and limitation of worldly existence. With a film title that signifcant, the movie should be interesting, right? That's right. It really is. The brief synopsis above is not even enough good enough to describe the movie. Without giving any spoilers, I left it that way. The tone of Moksha is different - a bit dark, yet a bit drama-like? Honestly, I can not find the words to describe this movie. Releasing in 2001, it was such a beautiful film. In the beginning, cinematography is gorgeous. The dream sequences are breath-taking. How it was captured reminded me of Hollywood's fiim, The Cell. In the beginning, you see the sulking Vikram just pondering what his life meant. The present tense is in black and white while the past is in colors.

Inspiration for me to start reviewing on Moksha is because of Ajnabi. She was curious about Arjun's other films because she's only seen one Arjun film. :) Thanks so much! It's been a while since I've seen Moksha. Although I love Moksha, it is not everyone's type of movie. Not everyone will love it. Some will hate it because Arjun's character Vikram goes through changes in the movie. He struggles through a lot in his life because of the decisions he's made. People complain now how we haven't seen a lot of those cute love stories like we used to. The movie is very unpredictable and the music is beautiful.

Sadly I've been neglecting my websites lately. I started
Arjun Rampal Online several years ago. (Website being shut down, read this post why) I uploaded all the songs from Arjun's movies on YouTube. I'm sharing it here on Blogspot so others may be interested in seeing Arjun's films. I hope to review all his films in the feature here. So enjoy the songs from Moksha with English subs.

Song #5 - "Jaan Leva"
A dream song involving Vikram, Ritika, and Neelima. This is the most famous and catchy song of the movie. When the dvd first release, this song wasn't featured!!!! I was so mad. I had to get me a copy with the song in the movie.

  2. Nicki,

This looks good! Thanks for the review. I've been wanting to see a good Arjun movie where he is "at his best" and not second banana to Shahrukh. Because he IS so hot!

  3. Reema - Moksha is definitely different. LOL, girl. It's funny because when I first started to do the reviews on Blogspot, it wasn't like this but I think with older films I've seen before...I like to show visually what the film is about.

Nida - Yes, please do watch Moksha. I would love to see what you think about it. Arjun is sooo yummy in the movie. I agree with you. I'm so sick and tired of how he is recognized now because of SRK.

  4. Arjun was really great in this one! The movie showcased him pretty well, I think. Another movie that I liked him in was Tehzeeb. Have you see it?

  5. bollyviewer - I do love Arjun in Tehzeeb but I don't like the movie too much. The movie is more Urmila/Shabana focused.

  9. theBollywoodFan - I still think Arjun is underrated, yes. However, with the help of SRK, I think he has more fans. (Temptation Concerts, OSO, Don, KANK)

I have to disagree on Arjun versus John. I've done the comparising before a while ago. John holds an even special place in my heart too. I didn't like John at first but I grew to love him. I think John's film choices versus Arjun's earlier ones were much better which portrayed John as a better actor than Arjun. But now, it's the reverse with John and Arjun. I like Arjun's film choices more now.

I haaated I See You. I thought it was a poor remake version of Hollywood's Just Like Heaven (I loved it). I loved Yakeen though.

I'm also a sucker for a guy with a hot bod. I think John is aging better than Arjun too. Both are the same ages.

I have Anwar but haven't watched it. I love the one famous song in the film. I am blank right now and can not remember the title, lol. Gosh, I have too many films to watch, lol
