Kaakha Kaakha - Surya & Jyothika, that's all you need to know.

http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu31/nickikim07/Kaaka%20Kaaka/surya_diya.jpg

Yah, I finally saw Kaakha Kaakha. Yes, I enjoyed it. After Kaakha Kaakha and Sillunu Oru Kaadhal, I must all the films of this real-life couple -- Surya & Jyothika. They rock! Isn't their daughter, Diya, adorable?? Hmmm, now I have to hunt down Poovellam Keetuppar, Uyirile Kalanthathu, Perazhagan, Maayavi, I think that's it for now.

http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu31/nickikim07/Kaaka%20Kaaka/kaakakaaka.jpg

Kaakha Kaakha is the Tamil word that is equivalet to the Hindi word, Khakee. Just like the movie, Khakee, Kaakha Kaakha is about men in uniforms whose jobs are to help protect the society. No, neither films are remakes of one another but same genre.

That's the jist of the storyline. Add in a beautiful love story to a man who has always been a loner. Things get complicated.

I won't give any big spoiler for this film but it's going to be very descriptive so read and beware! Lots of screen caps.

Anbuselvan is the loner of the group of friends. He has no one to worry about but himself. And he likes it that way. But that all changes when......

Maya is a fun, loving girl who is beautiful, sweet, caring, yet sassy and bold. She knows what she wants and isn't afraid to admit it. Jyothika is just too adorable. The more films I watch of hers, the more I love her.

Sethu is one of the criminals who Anbu and his friends were looking for. They must terminate him.

http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu31/nickikim07/Kaaka%20Kaaka/PDVD_062.jpg

However, they didn't know about Sethu having a brother at that time. Pandia seeks revenge for Sethu. He must wipe out Anbu and his friends, even their love ones.

I looooved the movie. Surprisely, it was a low budget movie that turned out to be a hit. Surya & Jyothika makes me love the film even more but the storyline is good and keeps you entertained from beginning to end. I didn't want to give out too many spoilers but did describe the film, overall. A must watch.

  1. I am w/ you on the Jyothika-Surya love- v cute.
And its so strange, but the more Southern Indian movies I see, the more the word "rowdy" gets engrained in my vocab- its so crazy how they refer to "rowdism" in almost every film (that I have seen!) :D

  2. I like this movie, but for some inexplicable reason, I prefer the Telugu remake, Gharshana with Asin and Venkatesh.

Other Jyotika movies you might want to check out: Pachaikili Muthucharam(Tamil remake of Derailed, or The Train, I can't figure out which), Arul, Mozhi, and Poovellam Un Vasam(although, honestly, I wasn't really feeling this the first couple of times I watched it, but after the third or fourth viewing, I grew to kind of like it).

  3. This looks really good. I'm starting to think that I might even love South Indian films more than Hindi movies eventually. ;-)

  4. Shweta Mehrotra Gahlawat,

I agree. The more I watch South Indian movies, the more their vocabulary gets ingrained in me. Before I started watching these films, I never used words and phrases such as "rogue", "rowdy", "your good name", "I'll slipper you", "reform".. the list goes on and on.

  5. Hey, I haven't really watched any South Indian movies. Please recommend some for a starter. Thanks!

  6. Shweta - I <3 Surya-Jyothika. I hope I am able to find all their films together. Hahaha, I agree with the South Indian language. Kinda funny. I'm sure it's like that in the states too. I'm a Southerner and we say "Ya'll" LOL

lapetitediva - Really? I have to look up the Telugu version. Thanks for the Jyothika recommendations. The Hindi version The Train is a remake of the Hollywood movie, Derailed - seen both. :)

Ajnabi - I think all film industries have the good and the bad. It's just that I'm watching all the movies that I should first, lol. I just follow to closely to Bollywood films, that's all.

    Ms. Cai - LOL

Bhargav - For Tamil films, I highly recommend Autograph or Genelia's film, Sachein For Telugu films, Genelia & Siddharth's film Bommarillu or Siddharth's film Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana.

  10. Just came across ur blog... a hmong chic reviewing indian movies.. (specially tamizh/telugu movies)... was a big surprise... :)

One correction in this particular review.... the hindi movie khakhee refers to the color of the uniform the police wear... (derived from the english word kakhi)... whereas, kaakha in tamizh means "to protect"... it is used as kaakha kaakha cos of devotional song which was sung in praise of Lord Muruga (son of Lord Shiva)... whose firt line is kaakha kaakha kanagavel kaakha.. (Let the spear of Lord Muruga protect us)...

I am not a avid indian movie fan, cos frankly i find them silly... I only watch a handful based on the credentials of the director... Here are a few recommendations that u might like...

    (Directors name in brackets)

Tamizh - Mouna Ragam (Maniratnam), Kannathil Muthammital (Maniratnam), Devar Magan (Bharathan), Kuruthi Punal (P C Sriram), Sethu (Bala), Pithamagan (Bala), Naan Kadavul (Bala), Mozhi (Radha Mohan)

Hindi - Luck by Chance (Zoya Akhtar), Omkara (assuming u still haven't seen it, Vishal Bharadwaj), Kaminey (Vishal Bharadwaj)

    Have fun and Keep writing...
