Recommendations: Indian cinema college movies

Ever since I did the review for the Telugu film, Happy Days, I wrote about how Bollywood doesn't have many young love, high school/college type of movies. If there is any in Bollywood, I want to see more of that.

BollywoodDeewana agreed that not many Bollywood films have the school atmosphere and would like to see Bollywood have movies such as the Hollywood movie, Mean Girls.

That would be great. I would like to add, I would like to see something like Bring it On and A Cinderella Story.

Or like Korean movies, My Tutor Friend, 100 Days with Mr. Arrogant, or My Little Bride.

But I do realize that these Hollywood and Korean movies that were mentioned are female-focused, which Bollywood doesn't have many of. Unless it's more of an "art" film, such as Corporate, Satta, Daman, etc.

Bollyviewer commented that there were many Bollywood films that took place in the college environment before 1990.

Bollyviewer listed a few:

  • Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak - more of a Romeo-Juliet type of movie and not enough school environment for me

  • Daulat Ki Jung - not enough school again, plus parents are the real obstacle of their love

  • Dil - same as above, dang Aamir-Juhi, hehehe
  • Khiladi - been a while since I've seen it but I mainly remember it for being an action flick and not enough school atmosphere

  • Mashooq - haven't seen but read the synopsis and don't think it would fit what I'm looking for

  • Kuch Kuch Hota Hai - first half is college atmosphere but want entire movie to be youthful, don't grow up....yet, hehehe

  • Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi - fits what I'm looking for, seen it, liked it, but didn't love.
Based on that, prefer films that deal with love between the hero and heroine without the parents' interference. Plus I wanted at least 80% of the movie to be focus on school setting. Definitely prefer the genre to be a romantic comedy.

So yes, movies like Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Happy Days, or Mere Pehla Pehla Pyaar type of movies will do.

Happy Days is a South Indian film so any recommendations for any Indian cinema will be great.

Lapetitediva suggested the Tamil film, Kallori (sounds interesting so only I would know if I watch it), Tamil film, Ullam Ketkumea (definitely sounds like what I'm looking for), & Telugu film, Devadasu (not sure if this is what I'm looking for).

Now that I think about it. Even Sachien and Happy may fit in the category, so Devadasu could fit too. However, looking at more movies focus on the school atmosphere.

Suggestions, anyone?

Again, at least 80% school atmosphere and no parents-in-the-way-with-their-love type of movie.

Thanks so much!

I know. I know. Bollywood is known for its masala. Again, I like to complicate things and make it more difficult :)

TheBollywoodFan suggested Afansa Pyar Ka (didn't like, not enough college atmosphere) & Mohabbatein (not really what I'm looking for since it's mostly focused on AB, SRK, and Aish. Again, another parent in the way type of movie)

Darshit recommended the following:

  • Main Hoon Naa - love isn't the focus. I don't want some college; I want mostly. So no backdrop at all.

  • Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya - ditto as above - seen it and loved it though

  • Dil Dosti Etc - I actually have the dvd and got it mainly for Shreyas and didn't even know what the synopsis is, lol, but it sounds interesting, not sure if that's what I'm looking for but all for Shreyas!

  • Dil Jo Bhi Kahey - haven't seen but if college is just the backdrop then nope, but still sounds interesting

  • Duniya Dilwalon Ki - haven't seen but read the synopsis that it has college backdrop but may watch it for Tabu - just learn that this is the Hindi dubbed version of the Tamil film, Kadhal Desam

  • Prefer romantic comedy or so. A Socha Na Tha feel with college atmosphere. So no Yuva type of movies.

But out of all this, I did remember another film that falls in that category that I'm looking for - Ishq Vishk (liked it a lot but has been a while, re-watch?)

Seen Jaane Tu Ya Jaana Na (liked it a lot too but it's more of an after-college film)

Thanks so much for the suggestions!!!!

A Bollywood romance where parents and family do NOT play a big role is very rare! QSQT and Maine Pyaar Kiya started a trend of teenage romances that lasted quite a while. So for ages every second Hindi movie had a college romance with weightier matters kicking in after the romance had begun. Guess Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander and Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi are the only ones that fit your criteria.

    Main Hoon Naa !!!!

I think in recent times, its the only one with college. Another one is Dil Dosti Etc. which emphasized on college politics more. Another one is Style which is somewhat remake of Khiladi.

Movies which has mostly first half as a college backdrop are Dil, Dil Jo Bhi Kahey, Pyar Kiya toh Darna Kya & Barsaat. And though I haven't seen these two-Duniya Dilwalon Ki and Holi - I think they both are totally college movies.
see, the word DIL is so common in most college movie....hehehe.]Great topic of discussion. And yes, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar is 'the' best of the lot. And by the way, C'mon, we are Bollywood, we have to have the masala of Family values Lovestories etc. in all movies. LOL :D

@theBollywoodFan: I don't think there would be much college atmosphere in 3idiots. Cause whatever stills are out, they are showing much matured stuff. [the marriage, the Ladakh pics and all]. So I am *worried* they would not kill the novel [like Hello did]. But again, I am assured that Raju Hirani would do complete justice.

TBF - I guess I should have been more specific about the type of college films I was looking for. I wanted more of a romantic comedy feel, not really dramatic, hehehe. Otherwise, Yuva could have taken it too, but it was a remake of the Tamil film, Ayutha Ezthuthu

bollyviewer - give it to me to make it difficult, huh? LOL, that's why my criteria is tougher.

I haven't seen the original movie, Break Away, where Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander took inspiration from either.

I thought of a movie that does fit my criteria.

    ISHQ VISHK

Darshit - nope for Main Hoon Naa because love isn't the focus.

I don't want some college; I want mostly. So no backdrop at all.

But I am going to edit with ISHQ VISHK.I haven't seen Dil Dosti Etc but I just got the dvd. I haven't seen Dil Jo Bhi Kahey so I can't comment yet. BIt I did look it up and I don't think it fits what I'm looking for.

Duniya Dilwalon Ki sounds like something I am looking for.

Well, I'm looking for something "different" so that's why my criteria is so difficult, lol

Hello anonymous - I've seen Ishq Vishk before but it's been a long time. Maybe I'll re-watch it and post it here. :)

Nicki, I just remembered that there is a Telugu movie called "Nuvve Kavali" starring Tarun & Richa Pallod/Sharma as college kids & best friends. I don't think there was any family angle attached to it. I remember it being a big hit when it was released & launching Tarun's career in tollywood. It also won a lot of awards. So, check it out.

A recent movie with a lot of college backdrop is "Kotha bangaru lokam" starring 'happy days' guy Varun Sandesh(its his 2nd movie). I haven't seen it, but remember hearing that it has a family angle attached to it. So, not sure if this would fit your criteria.
Oh, there is another one! The new telugu movie 'Josh'(debut of Naga Chaitanya) is releasing this week. It is said to be a college based story...another one to add to your list.

    Kiran.
